Re: Resolution 263-23: Testimony in Support of Resolution to purchase (TMK 328008100) or the
entire shoreline of the 'ili of Pepe'ekeo by the County through the POMC process.
My name is Lora Cardines and I am a longtime resident of Pepe'ekeo and I support the resolution for
purchase of (TMK 328008100) for preservation and stewardship of the shoreline area of the entire 'ili
of Pepe'ekeo. I have lived in Pepe'ekeo for my entire life.
For many generations in the past, my family has enjoyed accessing the shorelines of Pepe'ekeo and I
support this resolution so our keiki can have access for generations to come.
I have been on the Pepe'ekeo Community Association for over 15 years, and we worked hard to
make sure the access to the Pepe'ekeo shoreline would continue for our children and grandchildren.
did this out of love for our people and the land.
As a child, I would go to the shoreline with my parents to fish and gather other items for us to eat and
to enjoy the ocean. Today, the access is very limited and there is usually just a pathway to get to the
ocean. It is hard to get in. Especially for the older generation. I can't walk far anymore.
The access to the shoreline is important for our keiki. It is a place for them to go, to learn and enjoy
and stay out of trouble, so they won't get into drugs and do something besides playing on their
phones or watching TV. The shoreline has so many resources for our keiki and our families.
Purchasing the shoreline under the County. of Hawai'i PONC process would fulfill long-standing
promises to the Pepe'ekeo community of protecting this shoreline into the future for generations to
come.
