HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0641.000 1998-2000 Hi! My name is David and I live in Kona. Today I am here to propose an action to meet
the need I believe we have for more camp grounds for this County.
Under the Recreation section of the General Plan, it states the goal to "provide a wide
variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors of this County." This
County has only 11 campsites that have a total land mass of 6.5 acres. This makes an
average of half an acre for each site. This means that there is only one campground
for every acres of land, and only % of the land is available for camping.
The County of Kauai has 8 campsites with a total land mass of 16 acres, which is 2
acres per site. They have one campground for every acre of land on their
island; and of their land is available for camping. I think ~~~cEiVEt) Qild be able
to use a lot more of our land for camping. nme-__.__, gy _

Under standards, it states in part: "parks provide opportunities for camping dnd every
section of the island should be adequately served." I've been in boy scouts, and we
go on camping trips together. There are only five campsites on this side of the island,
and it gets boring going to the same places q II the time. 1'd like to propose that the
County develop some of the land it holds to be available for camping, and to try and
acquire more land from the state to develop for camping as well.
The General Plan also says that "parks should be centered around a major natural
asset, such as a beach, sorest or volcanic feature." I believe you should also build
some campgrounds in the forest because ~ of the eleven campgrounds right now
are at the beach. It's easy to get to the beach, but it's hard to be able to spend time in
the forest because it's privately owned, or it's hard to tell how to get to public access
land.
I think this would be a good idea for the residents of the County, for all of us to be able
to enjoy all parts of our island. I also think it would be good for our economy, because
then visitors who like to camp, like Americans and Europeans, would come to our
island for outdoor vacations.
Thank you for listening to my proposal and I hope you will build more campsites.
