Dear politicians,
My Wife have been living at this address for 16 years. In that 16 years we
have been witness to the amount of growth that has caused me to finally
get disgusted enough to write this letter.
1. In 16 years, we have seen the roads in Hawaiian Acres go from
barely passable to impassable. The increase in traffic on 1 Rd
(Uhini Ana) alone has gone up 10 -fold. 1 Rd. (Uhini Ana) is a one
lane Rd. and cannot sustain this amount of traffic. Much Like
Volcanos Highway.
2. In light of the recent events on Maui I feel this situation needs to
be addressed. The roads on Big Island are not safe for emergency
travel. I am speaking for my home in Hawaiian Acres. I cannot
speak for the other "UNIMPROVED" subdivisions. On Hilo Side
The laws regulating "UNIMPROVED; subdivisions on this Island
are almost as old as I am and I am 79.
3. If, God forbid, we should have a wildfire in the Acres our escape
routes are non-existent due to road conditions. If, God forbid, we
should be confronted with another eruption of Kilauea as we did in
2018, we would be in the same position.
4. We have been asking for state and county assistance more times
than I have been here. In 16 years, I have given more money for 1
Rd (Uhini Ana) than the county or state have. My wife works in
Comm. N 4-WIM

Pahoa as a teacher. She drives there daily and pays the gas tax! just
as everyone else. I have a program on Naleo and must drive there
twice a week, I also pay gas tax! In the mornings if I get stuck in
traffic on Volcanos Hwy I will sit and idle for long stretches at a
time. Wasting Gas. Global warming? The same goes for Hwy 130
from Pahoa to Hilo. We also pay property tax!
5. Finally: If there is any emergency requiring our evacuation, we
have little or no hope. You proved that in 2018 when an
"UNIMPROVED" road had to be resurfaced or graded for just a
few escapees from Pahoa
6. Just for a reminder Mountain View School is slightly above
Hawaiian Acres and Fern Acres. If there is a disaster in one or both
of these areas, it will involve the school. In the past when we have
had storms in the Acres trees have been downed making it
impossible to exit this area.
