Good morning. My name is Ryan Kilkenny and I'm from Kailua-Kona. I'm
speaking to you this morning for all the kids that go to the pool in Kor~a~

When the Kona Aquatic Center opened, tons of people went to it. Around
the end of the summer the County was talking about charging fees to swim.
Parks and Rec has proposed a fee schedule to the Mayor.
They are thinking about charging each kid .50 per day~in the year
2000 and 1.00 in 2002. A monthly pass would be $5.00 in 2000 and
$10.00 in 2002.
The real problem is some of us kids don't get allowance, which would mean
no swimming at the pool. It says in the general plan that "The county shall
provide facilities and a broad recreational program for all ages." Charging
pool fees is not going by the general plan because charging makes some
children not able to go. Also, people in Hawii have the worst health
compared to other places and they need to exercise. I know many kids that
can't afford it if there's a charge.
I called all the pools on all the islands and found that none of them
charge fees.
If the other pools can operate without fees, Kona's pool can too.
What 1 suggest, and I think a lot of kids would agree is that there be
no charge.
If you can't agree to have no charge, at least make it more affordable, like
.25 or less for kids and .50 for adults, and don't raise the fee in 2002.
