Subject: My Testimony for Resolution 328- 23 - Old Coast Guard Road
Aloha Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions Committee,
Thank you for hearing my testimony in support of the transfer of Old Coast Guard Road to the County of Hawaii. I am a
property owner on the Old Coast Guard and support this transfer because it is good for the public and Kohala
Community.
This is an import action for the County to take because it will ensure that the Honoipu Landing, Puerto Rican monument,
Na Hele Trail/Ala Kahakai trail, and North Kohala Historic Sites State Park including the birthplace of King Kamehameha
I and Mo'okini Heiau all have paved public vehicle access preserved forever.
The Coast Guard Road road is the only easy to access by car location to these sites. It also the only drive up shoreline
access location for several miles in either direction. It has been on the PONC list for many years. It is in limbo with the
federal government avoiding responsibility&actively trying to unload it for over a decade.
The road has been used by the public for years and it needs a local government owner like the County of Hawaii.The
military has been gone for 30 years. The County has taken over and maintained many other roads for public shoreline
access and recreation purposes. Please do the right thing for public access in Kohala.
