RE: County Council Resolution 323 23

Dear County Council Members:
vso
I support County Council Resolution 323 23, introduced by Cindy Evans, that calls for
the mayor to enter negotiations for acquisition of the Old Coast Guard Road in North
Kohala and that "the road be transferred in fair condition."
Please keep the Old Coast Guard Road open and accessible. I have used that road for
over 40 years. I used to visit my friend, who was active in the Coast Guard there. I go
for walks down there. It's been a great place to take my children, grandchildren and 90
year old mother to see the whales breaching near the shore and to simply enjoy a
sunset by the sea.The public has been using this access road for a long, long time. It is
a traditional fishing and gathering place used by the kanaka maoli and kama'aina
alike. The road allows access to historic and sacred sites: Mo'okini Heiau, Kamehameha's
birthsite, the State Na Ala Hele Trail at Puakea, the Puerto Rican Arrival Monument, the
existing public access trail at Upolu and the proposed Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail.
In addition, there are also many homes along this road.
The Old Coast Guard Road's lower portion and parking lot are on private land that has
been ranked high on the county's Open Space PONC priority list for public purchase
since 2018. The owner is willing to sell it along with the upper portion of the road.
Not waiting for federal money to fix the road, a crew of Kohala citizens volunteered their
time and money to fix myriad potholes in the road. Recently, Kohala citizens gave their
money and efforts to fix our county public swimming pool! We put our backs, time and
money into fixing what other agencies are responsible for and deserve some recognition
for saving the county and country a lot of money!
Please support County Council Resolution 323 23. Mahalo nui.
Sincerely,
Dorothy McCorriston
