A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE DAUGHTERS OF
HAWAIʻI TO ASSIST WITH IRRIGATION SYSTEM REPAIRS TO PRESERVE THE ROYAL BANYAN TREE AT HULIHEʻE PALACE.
WHEREAS, the Daughters of Hawaiʻi is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to perpetuate the memory and spirit of old Hawaiʻi and to preserve the nomenclature and correct
pronunciation of the Hawaiian language; and
WHEREAS, in the 1880s, the Royal Banyan Tree at Huliheʻe Palace in Kailua-Kona was planted by Queen Kapiʻolani from a cutting taken from a banyan tree at ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu,
which was a gift from Indian royalty to Queen Kapiʻolani’s husband, King Kalākaua; and
WHEREAS, the Royal Banyan Tree at Huliheʻe Palace is a major feature and landmark of Historic Kailua Village, and the irrigation system requires maintenance and repairs for its continued
preservation; and
WHEREAS, the Daughters of Hawaiʻi is requesting funds to replace control valves and pop-up rotors for the irrigation system on the Huliheʻe Palace grounds; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Liquor Control supports organizations that provide educational activities and community events in a drug-free and alcohol-free environment, such as the Daughters
of Hawai‘i at Huliheʻe Palace; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to the Department of Liquor Control to provide a grant
to the Daughters of Hawaiʻi to assist with irrigation system repairs to preserve the Royal Banyan Tree at Huliheʻe Palace.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
