It is with great pleasure and honor to submit testimony in favor of the proposed ordinance to name the
balitieIci within Wong Stadium as the"James"Jimmy"Correa Ballfield".
I met Mr. Correa at the age of 12 when I began playing on h Pony Team. I continued to play on his .
youth teams throughout my high school years. I was also a member on Coach Correa's adult aged teams
in the Hawaii AJA and Hawaii Senior Baseball Leagues. In total, estimate that'l was a member of his
teams for over 10 years.
A mark of a great coach is to impart knowledge to prepare players for the next level. Mr.Correa's . •
• coaching style was based on no-nonsense,simple,concise and universal lessons on fundamentals. He
was able to address the needs of beginner to advanced ball players. Mr.Correa prepared me to compete
• in high school (Hilo High School, 1976-1978)and college base:-..fall(Pacific University,1979-1982).Armed
wfth Mr. Correa's baseball lessons, I began coaching in 1983. Over a 20+year span, I have coached every
• level of baseball from T-ball to University teams. I recall that Mr.Correa was always supportive of my
coaching. I have fond memories of having pre game dugout chats with him while he"assisted" both
sons',Tommy's Waiakea and Andy's Kamehameha High School Teams. He always had kind words to
convey to me but also lamented on how his players could be better. I am proud to say that I am a part of
Pv1.-..Correa's coaching legacy.
