James Correa was a long-time employee of Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and A 40-year member of the HGEA. Mr. Correa is best known as the Recreation Director of Andrews Gym, where he touched the lives of so many young people and was perhaps the best-known individual in the Waiakea area. Throughout his tenure as a county employee, Mr. Correa served as a coach of a number of Hilo youth baseball teams as well as the coach of St. Joseph High School. Countless young boys in Hilo were touched by the ever-smiling Mr. Correa who gave most of his life to teaching them the game. After a working and coaching career that spanned decades, it is only fitting to recognize the tremendous contribution of James Correa by naming the playing field at Dr. Francis Wong Stadium for him. So many of us can count Jimmy Correa as a mentor and second father. As one of his former players, Mr. Correa can be credited for inspiring confidence in me and my abilities. I can honestly say that I would never have succeeded without the life lessons that Mr. Correa taught me, and I know I am not alone in saying that. For these and so many reasons I have not articulated, I offer the unequivocal and strong support of the HGEA for naming the playing field of Wong Stadium for James "Jimmy" Correa, our long-time union member. This is at the least a fitting honor for a man who dedicated his life to the youth of Hilo and whose legacy lives on through so many of us.
