It's Dennis with a statement supporting the recognition. Hope it's ok. Thanks to you and your
committee for all your hard to make this a reality.
My name is Dennis Wong, son of Dr Francis Wong. On behalf of my family, we would
like to express our support for naming the ballfield at Wong Stadium the James "Jimmy"
Correa Ballfield.
I knew Jimmy when he was coaching the Puna Braves baseball team in the Hilo Sr.
League and I was playing for the Wanderers team. I was able to see first hand how much
Hilo baseball and the participants meant to him. He helped many improve their baseball
skills including some players on other teams in the league. I was one of the fortunate ones to
receive tips from him along the way.
If my Dad were here, he would agree that Jimmy deserves all the recognition that the
County Council can bestow upon him. They shared the same love for Hilo and Hilo sports.
They mostly cared about the participants. The participants included not only those who
played, but also those who devoted so much of their time to help Hilo sports teams grow and
get stronger.
A suggestion...The Council might consider placing a portrait of the "Guardian of Hilo
Baseball" James "Jimmy" Correa on a stadium pillar for all to see and remember his many
contributions to the game.
