Re: Communication 612—Nomination of Dr. Jim Beets to the Environmental Management
Commission
Dear Council Members:
The Sierra Club of Hawai'i,Hawaii Island Group (HIG) strongly supports the nomination of Dr.
Jim Beets to the County of Hawai`i Environmental Management Commission (EMC).
Dr. Beets has been a dedicated and engaged member of the Sierra Club for over 35 years and an
active member of the HIG for over 15 years. He has served on the HIG Conservation Committee
and has provided reliable and timely webmaster/IT support for the HIG Executive Committee
since 2019. His attendance record and participation in the monthly Executive and Conservation
Committees meetings has been exemplary.
Dr. Beets has also been active in other local and professional environmental and conservation
groups and committees through his academic work at the University of Hawai`i. He served as a
valued Professor of Marine Science at UH-Hilo for 20 years, and served in numerous positions
that interacted directly with the community, such as Department Chair,Division Chair, Interim
Dean of the new College of Natural and Health Sciences. He has also served on several state
committees and environmental/conservation organizations, including the Hawai`i Conservation
Alliance and Division of Aquatic Resources Holomua Committee.
HIG appreciates Mayor Roth's acknowledgement of the extensive,relevant knowledge and
expertise Dr. Beets will bring to the EMC through this nomination and asks that the GOEA
Committee refer Dr.Beet's nomination with a favorable recommendation to the full county
council.
