Aloha Dear Honorable Councilmembers,
If someone asked me to think of one of the loveliest and most historical neighborhoods to hang out in Hawaii, I
would say the Hilo Bayfront, Reeds Bay and the Banyan Drive area. The sweeping views of the bay and
Mauna Kea and the vintage architecture is one of the very few places remaining that retains the gentle grace of
"old Hawaii." Outside of Hilo, a place of such grandeur and beauty no longer exists.
If someone were to ask me to name an ugly monstrosity that symbolizes a longstanding greed that has •
destroyed communities and ecosystems around the world, I would say something related to the automotive
and fossil fuel industry, like... a CAR LOT.
And yet, developers are pushing a plan to change zoning of a parcel near Reeds Bay to "industrial," in order to
erect just that—a CAR LOT—adjacent to one of the most notable neighborhoods in all of the Hawaiian
islands???You may as well stick a car lot next to Diamond Head, or at Martha's Vineyard, or along the Left
Bank in Paris.
There is such a thing as desecration of community space. Putting a car lot on this parcel wins the grand prize.
There is a reason for zoning law. It is to prevent violations of land use from taking place, like this one.
This parcel should NOT be rezoned from resort to light industrial!
PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. w Qc-
