Aloha Councilmembers,
The pending request to change zoning of the parcel near Reeds Bay-one of the most loved public places in
Hilo, and on our island -to "industrial," in order to erect a CAR LOT is nothing short of callous, self-interested,
and disrespectful.
It is wholly incompatible with surrounding uses and it poses a significant hazard (and nuisance) to public safety
and public well-being and enjoyment of our precious gardens, park and recreation areas.
There is a place for everything, but this is clearly NOT the place for a car dealership and/or ALL of the things
associated with car dealerships that are so egregiously incompatible with the public's safety and right to enjoy
our public gathering and recreation spaces.
Our current zoning and comprehensive plan should be used to protect our public and our safety and
to prevent such clearly incompatible uses and the desecration of a community space that is so universally
beloved.
There are appropriate, safe locations for a car dealership, car lot, service and repair shops, and the associated
traffic, noise, and many hazardous products utilized in this industry. Banyan Drive, Reeds Bay, and our
community recreational space is NOT an appropriate, compatible, or safe location.
In the interest of the public and public safety, I ask you to deny this zone change. Comm. No. SUM
