I'm writing to you in hope that Hawaii County will NOT approve the rezoning proposed in Bill 87 to change Kalaniana`ole Street from resort hotel to limited industrial. As a lifelong resident in Hilo, I remember when this property was Ebisuzaki Fishing Supply and have found memories of spending the weekends with my dad getting our fishing supplies, fishing near Suisan and getting ice shave at Itsu's or Kawate's. My dad owned a business and did not have much free time so these moments spent with him are extra meaningful to me. It is these types of fond memories that I hope my daughter can have and share with her future family. We are current patrons of the businesses in this location and my daughter loves Millie's Deli and Snack Shop, especially the wraps and banana smoothie. It is her go to stop after her golf lessons at the Naniloa Golf driving range. Shops like Millie's are an important part of our community and with the high cost of supplies, labor etc. cannot be easily relocated. We do not want to risk losing these precious locally owned gems. I realize the owner would like to sell the property but I would ask that you consider the rezoning part of the request. In addition to losing the current tenants which would need to relocate or close. The current location is a pivotal location to the pier where the cruise ships dock and at the end of Banyan Drive where the major hotels for Hilo are located. Vendors like Millie's are the spirit of Hawaii that tourist take home with them. As Maya Angelou said "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.".
