I strongly oppose Bill 87 for Zendo Kern's request for Aloha Kia to rezoning from Resort to ML-limited Industrial for a
proposed service station with 135 parking lot stalls on sensitive costal, SMA land TMK(3)2-1-6-2. Across from Reed's
Bay Ice Pond.
I am sitting at the restaurant in Hilo called The Pond's and staying at the Grand Naniloa for a staycation with my
husband. I find as a Kama'aina of this island with long standing relationship to this particular area to be a no brainer
decision to vote NO from all County Council members.
As a Hawai'i Island resident I Malama each Moku as this is the Hawaiian way, we look after each other. Please listen to
your backyard voices and many have no idea what could change in Hilo in this location. Many who advocated for their
2005 General Plan will find this request appalling.
I am watching local families and keiki in the pond and families enjoy this waterfront location. I am envious to observe
such a local vibe as our backyard in Kona has been voted toward luxury and gated communities leaving it culture-less
and performs as a cash cow for this island. Our Hawai'i nei in Kona is inaccessible and we have lost economic diversity
with wealthy privileged part time owners poisoning our plants and dogs to get a better view and quite place when they
visit the island. That is our current backyard stories these days. I feel unwelcome in my own backyard where
celebrated my birthdays as a kid at Kahalu'u. Here in this area of Hilo, it thrives for local community and it must be kept
this way.
Hawai'i without Hawaiians isn't Hawai'i.
This should be rejected on the honorable account of the 2005 General Plan, marking this location in black and white
from the community as Special Places of Natural Beauty. Which is protected under the public trust doctrine, article XI,
section 1 of our Hawai'i State Constitution.
Furthermore my concern is if any industrial business occupies this location to be a direct environmental and cultural
violation let alone concerns around flight path easement.
Lastly we cannot ignore history and the data of tsunami, rising tides and floods.
Please give us hope today and have the heart of Hawai'i nei at the forefront in all decision making and the impact it will
bring for generations to come. People visit Hawai'i not Florida or another culture-less landscape like what Kona has
turned into as majority County Council leadership has voted towards the challenges and lack of affordable housing we
face today since I was a keiki.
Together we can help mend the past wrong doings of past majority decisions. One vote at a time in the same direction,
fostering respect to our host cultural landscapes, community gathering spaces and celebrate'aina to mitigate human
impact. Move us away from tourism to celebrate community, culture and small businesses. Comm. 10* 23
