I am writing to you today to urge you to reject the funds requested by the mayor to hire outside counsel to fight Hui Malama Honokohau v. County of Hawai'i and instead approve the restricted use of the funds for the sole purpose of hiring outside counsel to negotiate a settlement with Hui Malama Honokohau. I have spent much of my life in the Kealakehe and Honokohau area, particularly during my time as a high school student at Kealakehe HS.This region is precious to me--the waters of Honokohau are vital to the wellbeing of Hawaiian culture, fishing livelihoods, and recreation for locals. To countersue an organization that cares for our environment is beyond backwards and sets a terrible precedent for how we treat our'aina.
