Aloha Committee Chair and council members,
I support the intention of Resolution 287-23 and, in most cases,think it's time has come. One question I have is if always
requiring this option for CDP AC meetings is helpful.The most productive, interactive community meetings seem to be
in-person, and the CDPs are meant to be the most grassroots-y and interactive of all public meetings. Having said that,
I've been hiding out from covid and am often at work when meetings are taking place, so being able to take part in
issues and meetings I care deeply about by remote access has been a god-send.The challenge with the AC meetings and
other community-driven type planning meetings (like the General Plan open house at Old Airport Pavilion) is that many
of the best venues for that type of meeting aren't set up for remote access.
So I hope that,yes, all meetings held in sites where remote access is available will be remotely available to the public
while exceptions will be made to allow the maximum public attendance at other, off-campus meetings.
And one last thought:As much as there are IT issues to consider, members of the public should be able to show up
remotely and testify on the day of the hearing just like they can if they show up in person.That's been a discouragement
for many people as it adds another"to do"to their long lists when preparing and showing up to testify should be
enough to ask of the public to take part in meetings of their government.
Mahalo to Council rep Inaba for introducing this bill which will help increase public participation in our county's
democratic process.
