Subject: Old CoastGaurd Road
Please keep the Old Coast Gaurd Road open for those of us who walk out dogs, swim, watch sunsets and want to just
enjoy the ocean. I am submitting the suggested form letter below to add to my testimony as they seem to have said it
all.
"I am in support of resolution 328 23 which asks the County of Hawaii to enter into negotiations for
acquisition of the Coast Guard Road. The road, which extends from Akoni Pule Highway to the red
cinder road leading to Mo'okini heiau, is identified in the North Kohala Community Development plan
as a very important mauka-makai vehicle access to the ocean, the only access for several miles
either direction.
The lower portion of the road and the parking lot are on private land that has been ranked high on the
county's Open Space priority list for public purchase since 2018. The current private owner is willing
to talk about turning the lower road and parking lot over to the county, provided the upper portion is
first acquired by the county. Thus, the first step in support of preserving this important piece of land is
the county's action on this resolution.
Old Coast Guard Road provides access to the Kamehameha Birth site Monument, Mo'okini Heiau,
the State Na ala hele Trail at Puakea, the Puerto Rican Arrival Monument, the existing public access
trail at Upolu and the proposed Ala Khaki national Historic Trail, making it an important acquisition for
the County. "
Thank you, Kristi Kranz `
