My name is Jessica Kuzmier and I am from Kona. I am testifying against
Resolution 372-23. I believe the suit of Hui Malama Honokohau v.
County of Hawaii should be settled out of court, and that more policies
towards funding the upgrading the Kealakekhe Wastewater Treatment
plant with actionable plans of sustainability.
I believe that it's more important to fix the infrastructure problem that
has been cited more than anything else. The Kealakehe Wastewater
Treatment plant has released millions of gallons of treated sewage into
groundwater that flows into our Honokohau Harbor, causing irreversible
damage to the surrounding nearshore waters and the countless lives that
depend on them. I've seen it myself when swimming.
Please reject this resolution and do not approve the funds requested by
the mayor. Please use your powers to urge the administration to settle
the litigation, upgrade the Kealakehe Wastewater Treatment Plant, and
do what is right for Hawai`i's environment and people. Mahalo.
