I am writing to urge you to reject the funds requested by the mayor to hire outside counsel to fight Hid Malama Honokohau v. County of Hawai`i. Water recycling is what Hui Malama Honokohau is pushing for rather than a federal permit to keep dumping. Water recycling for irrigation generates revenue, protects sustainable yield in the aquifer, and is a common practice here • throughout the state. Several companies with the expertise and access to capital have approached Mayor Roth with solutions. Let's work with these companies rather than throw taxpayers' dollars on endless legal maneuvers that do not solve the problem. For over 25 years we have been working on solutions to end this illegal and harmful sewage dumping. We need you, the Council, to help set the policy to end this now. Please do not approve the funds requested by the mayor and use your powers to urge the administration to settle the litigation and work with the companies, Hawaii Community Foundation, and EPA Region 9 to solve the problem. Our future generations depend on our actions today. Mahalo nui loa Cynthia Punihaole Kennedy' rn -r -ate t-ri ` "" • UI Comm. N•. 0 TS Ref. To: [CD 11111 Ref. Date a'.EC ® 6 2023 1
