Subject: Bill 82
I'm in strong support of Bill 82 and any and all efforts to improve the substandard roads in our subdivisions,
predominantly in Puna, but sprinkled Islandwide. People cannot even conceive of the disrepair these roads are in, until
they actually experience them. I'll never forget my step mother coming out to Hawaii for my daughter's birth and
reacting to what we call roads. "Those aren't roads!" Indeed, with any kind of rain or runoff, these roads quickly become
the underlying lava rock and you just feel like a rambler barreling over pahoehoe lava. Suffice it to say, it does not bode
well for a regular commute. So many people suffer as a result of these poor road conditions. It was a source of misery
for me for many years,to say the least.
But I do worry about fire, police and ambulance trying to navigate these roads. I also know that there are plenty of
people who try to drive out on a rainy day and they end up ceasing their engine because they have to drive through
deep pools of water. The stories are endless and the sights are incredible, particularly for people living in "civilization,"
with paved roads or even better, sidewalks. These subdivisions are other worldly and, if this bill can help to level the
playing field, I'm all for it.
