Dear Honorable Chair Kimball,Vice-Chair Inaba, and Hawai'i County Council Members, ;j' __-
Flavored tobacco products have been a major contributor to the alarming increase in youth
vaping rates.The enticing flavors mask the harshness of tobacco and make it more
appealing to young individuals whom the taste of traditional tobacco may otherwise deter.
The accessibility and popularity of these flavored products among our youth have led to a
concerning addiction trend.
With nearly half of high school students experimenting with vaping and over 30%becoming
daily users, it is evident that flavored tobacco products pose a significant public health
threat to our community.The addictive nature of these products,fueled by the high nicotine
content, puts our youth at risk of developing long-term health issues.
As a public health educator and advocate, I have witnessed the detrimental impact of vaping
on the well-being of our youth.The addiction to flavored tobacco products not only affects
their physical health but also interferes with their academic and social development.
Implementing strong measures, such as prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products
through Bill 1o2, is crucial to curbing this epidemic and safeguarding the future of our
community.
By supporting Bill 102, you are taking a significant step towards protecting the health and
future of Hawai'i County. Let us prioritize the well-being of our youth and create an
environment that discourages the use of harmful and addictive substances.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue, and I hope you will vote in favor of Bill 102
to make Hawai'i County a healthier and safer place for our youth.
