Re:Testimony Amending Bill 107 to Exclude the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL)
trust lands from the Puna Makai Alternate Route or PMAR study
Aloha e Honorable Council Chair Kimball and Council Members,
As a resident of the Keaukaha Hawaiian Homestead Community that will be celebrating 100
years' this year, and a representative/member of our community association. I am writing in
STRONG OBJECTION to Bill 107 and the proposed amendment to Ordinance No. 23-51.
A product of displaced native Hawaiians who were removed from their residences in Keaukaha
and moved to Panaewa for the expansion of the Hilo Airport runway, I witnessed the sacrifices
many of our 'ohana made for the benefit of others.The County Sewage Plant, industrial
warehouses and gas storage facilities, the Hilo rubbish dump, and the HELCO electric plant
• continue to badger and deprive healthy living conditions for native Hawaiians.
It is imperative that our voices and requests are heard and followed upon by those that we
entrust as leaders.The impacts, once again will directly affect our future as native Hawaiians.
I support a safe alternative route between Puna and Hilo, however, this route cannot be
through DHHL trust lands.
