Dear Mr. Arakaki,
I am writing to support the acquisition by the County of Hawaii of a right of way along
the old Railroad from Hilo to Puna for a bicycle and recreational trail. I have ridden most of the
old road, and I think it would be a great addition to Hilo to have the entire routs preserved and
open to cyclists. Unlike the ridiculously short bike paths on Oahu (I can ride the Lanikai bike
path end to end in three minutes), the Railroad Avenue bike route would be a destination worth
traveling for. I t would also provide a safe commuter route for cyclists from Puna to reach Hilo.
For a reasonably fit person, Paradise Park is not too far from Hilo to ride in, but the heavy traffic
on the highway and in Keeau discourages cyclists. We cyclists very much appreciate the
county's support in this valuable project.
