Making former railroads accessible to the community in the ?nanner of "rails to trails" projects encourages cycling and walking, and by so doing, improves the health and welfare of the community both physically and spiritually. As we understand it, the resolution calls for "...the initiation of collaborative steps to be taken between the Hawaii County Council, the Honorable h~layor Stephen Yamashiro. County Departments, landowners, and interested members of the community to~ti•ard this right-of-wav acquisition, which will not have negative impacts on the current use of roadwav.'~ Further. the intention, as we understand it, is to open this 6 mile section to non-motorized public use -bicycling, ~~~alking, jogging. equestrian, wheelchair, and in-line sk~iting. Public motor vehicles would continue to be excluded - as they are at present. Current use by private farm vehicles on this road to access agricultural lots will continue.
