NĀHELEHELE FOR EXPENSES RELATED TO ITS HAWAIʻI ISLAND SEED BANK
WHEREAS, Kaʻahahui ʻO Ka Nāhelehele (Nāhelehele) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to facilitate and advocate for balanced scientific, cultural, and economic uses
of Hawaiian ecosystems that promote traditional ahupuaʻa-based management; and
WHEREAS, Nāhelehele is dedicated to the perpetuation of native dry forest plants, insects, and birds, many of which are endangered, and environmental restoration, protection, and conservation
of dry forest habitats; and
WHEREAS, the increase in wildfires on Hawaiʻi Island requires efforts in post-fire restoration of impacted native forests; and
WHEREAS, Nāhelehele would like to partner with the State of Hawaiʻi, Department of Land and Natural Resources to collect common native species and bank them as a mitigation for post-fire
restoration; and
WHEREAS, Nāhelehele is requesting funds for the cleaning, processing, packing, and databasing of the seed collections; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports research, development, control, and education that improves agricultural production, quality, resilience, and producer viability
or reduces the impact of pests or disease on agricultural crops, livestock, forests, or the community; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 5 will be appropriated to the Department of Research and Development to provide
a grant to Kaʻahahui ʻO Ka Nāhelehele for expenses related to its Hawaiʻi Island Seed Bank.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
