First the volcano came down, and took out 700 houses, many of which were TARs. "
The businesses in Pahoa took a huge hit to their livelihood. Then we had hurricane Iselle. 9
Then the pandemic came along to finish off what the volcano started. Next up the Insurance Indust: i '
pulling out, leaving us with HIPA,which forbids any business activity on the insured property, d'`a HUGE
price increase.
Now, our own County Counsel is coming to finish off any kind of economic activity in Puna by banning
TARs.
I guess it's right back to cooking math. and growing pakalolo, because any other kind of activity is strictly
banned. And since we have made into criminals, we might as well go big time.
I am sorry that the folks in Kona, and Honolulu have such big problems with the Short Term Vacation
Rentals, but this is not the case in Puna. All we have is our natural splendors, and the people who want
to come see them. There are no Big Hotels here, and nobody is going to build any in a volcanic zone.
When I finaled my building permit to keep myAirBnb, I had to tear out the stove,fridge and kitchen sink
of my Ohana,(Built with a Permit!!), so I couldn't long term rental it. This was to keep the Planning Dept.
happy. I suggest that if you want to increase the long term rental supply in the area,you talk to the
Planning Dept.which forbids it. And overhaul the Building Dept.which is doing it's damndest to stop all
construction. How many times can the plan checker send your plans back to you with red ink, on all the
things they didn't notice the last time they reviewed it?
3?4?5?6?. Where does it end? Not to mention being asked to do a lot of things,that are simply NOT in
the code. For that matter,why do we have a Universal Building Code that is the same for Nome Alaska,
or Puna Hi.?
This makes a travesty of all the "Revitalize Puna Celebrations"
Stop Scapegoating TAR's for all the bigger problems out there, and do something real to increase the
housing supply.
