Subject: Bill 121 Draft Support with Caveat
Aloha,
Mahalo for taking time to address this important topic in our community. In general, I favor the draft bill with
the following caveat which I recommend including in the final Bill.
I would include a provision for passing the Bill that no more hotels, motels, inns, apartment hotels, boarding
facilities, lodges or timeshares be authorized in the County.
Why? This Bill aims to relieve housing pressures. Housing pressures will only increase going forward as
families have more offspring. Thus, no more of the above accommodations as they all require land-- land that
we should thus use for resident dwellings.
If not held in check, more hotels will be built requiring more workers requiring more housing of which there
will be less available to be build since that land was used for a hotel.
If this caveat or one similar is not included, the impression will be that the hotel industry is heavily influencing
this bill which I can understand why they would do such. However, if stakeholders have the long-term interests
of our community in mind with respect to housing, then I think this is a good counterbalance to their money and
influence.
Mahalo,
