Aloha,
We are writing to register our concern and objection to the annual fees proposed in Bill
121. We have owned and operated a small un-hosted vacation rental with the apropriate
permits and tax ID numbers for several years. The combination of GET, TAT, & HCTAT
already combine to make one of the highest tax burdens paid by owners and short-term
guests in the entire country. There is little, if any, on-going work required of the county
to maintain existing registrations so there is no justification for charging substantial
annual renewals.
If the County Council feels it is absolutely imperative to collect even more money from
properly registered and compliant transient accommodation rentals it would be much
fairer to do so by slightly raising the HCTAT. The proposed "one-size-fits-all" annual
renewal is, in essence, a regressive tax where the financial burden will fall heavier on
the operators of smaller more affordable units than it does on larger more expensive
properties. We strive to provide a safe, clean, and affordable rental. Please support us in
providing affordable accommodations by not imposing annual renewal fees. There are
better, fairer ways to generate revenue.
