Dear Hawaii County Council,
My family has been visiting the Big Island yearly for the past 30 years, and we always stay at short-term
vacation rentals. We do this because it accommodates our multi-generational family better than hotels
do—we'd rather save money by cooking more of our own meals and share a home with family and friends
rather than stay at a hotel, where kids are not generally welcome and the living spaces are unsuitable.
I don't understand why the council would want to discontinue short-term vacation rentals. It won't solve
the affordable housing issue—the people who can't get into the housing market won't be able to afford
these properties either for purchase or long term rental. It won't drive vacationers like us to use hotels or
resorts, because they are too expensive and do not suit our needs. It will however result in a significant
loss in tourism dollars to the Islands, which I don't think is the intended outcome.
If short-term vacation rentals are banned,we would reluctantly stop visiting Hawaii and take our money
elsewhere.
I hope that you'll reconsider this idea.We love Hawaii and would love to continue to share it with our
family, children, grandchildren and close friends.
