I am dismayed by the proposed bill (125)to prohibit bicycle tours in North Kohala under the excuse of"safety."
This is preemptive victim blaming. Bicyclists are not the problem. Bicyclists do not injure motorists. Drivers have Filled bicyclists
all too often.
I believe the real safety hazards are impatient, inattentive, imperious,and (often) intoxicated drivers.
In a news report(*),Councilwoman Evans was quoted, "It can be horrifying to go up Kohala Mountain Road,which is windy,
narrow,there's no sight distance— it's stressful enough to drive on its own —and then round a corner and see six,eight, 10
bicyclists right in front of you."
This quote plainly describes the real problem: driving too fast on these roads. Drivers must be responsible for operating their
vehicles safely. If road conditions mean drivers cannot see far enough ahead to anticipate potential hazards (not just bicycles),
then they are driving too fast.
Please consider addressing the real safety problem: reduce the speed limit on these roads and enforce safe driving speed.
