I want to express my strong support of Bill 125, an ordinance amending Chaptern 6 Of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 edition, as amended), which would limit commercial bike tours from two roads in North Kohala. Both Mountain Road and Akoni Pule Highway approaching Pololu Valley are highly curving narrow roads with very limited or no shoulders. It is easy to wrap our heads around the pain, damage and mourning that would plague cyclists and their family as a result of a collision between cars/trucks. No one could want that amount of hurt for people who pay for the chance to enjoy the beauty of our rural roads, and also think there is safety in numbers. But let's all consider the horrible emotional pain, guilt, and suffering of any innocent driver who happens to accidently hit a bicyclist. That pain extends exponentially to the family of the driver, and to the caring community of North Kohala. Those of us who drive these two roads can see the clusters of commercial tour cyclists, who have never before traveled these roads, as a tragedy waiting to happen. Banning commercial bike tours is a step. Broader educational efforts by the biking • community is another step we can take. Please protect our bicyclists and drivers. Vote yes to Bill 125. mahalo, Toni Withington Hawi, Hawaii Comm. No. _ 0 Ref. To: Ref. Date A 2 1
