RESOLUTION
ENDORSING THE DESIGNATION OF THE OLD KONA AIRPORT STATE
PARK AS THE PERMANENT SITE OF THE BIG ISLAND FARM FAIR.
WHEREAS, the Old Kona Airport State Park has been the site for Kona's
znnual co~mnuni±y can~ival event for the past sixteen years; and
WHEREAS, the Old Kona Airport State Park is the only multipurpose facility
in West Hawaii which will accoimnodate outdoor festivals with attendance over
20,000; and
WHEREAS, the Old Kona Airport State Park has proven to be an
exceptionally suitable site for such events, given its central location and the
excellent cooperation and assista~ice rendered by the administration and staff of the
State Parks Division; acid
WHEREAS, the Big Island Fann Bureau, representing Kona, Kohala, and
Hilo counties, has sponsored the Big Island Fann Fair at the Old Kona Airport State
Park, as au extension of its service to youth and other community organizations and
the agricultural cotrununity it represents; and
WHEREAS ,the Big Island Fann Fair provides an excellent opportunity for
the commtmity to experience family-style entertaniment and agricultural related
educational activities, such as livestock, plant, produce, and aquaculture displays;
and
WHEREAS, the Big Island Fann Fair generates up to $55,000 annually for
the numerous participating nonprofit organizations, helping to fulfill their individual
fluid raising objectives and develop members' skills in leadership; and

WHEREAS, The Big Island Fann Bureau has expressed its desire to provide
site improvements on an annual basis and to work cooperatively with the State
Parks Division on projects, such as landscaping and recreational amenities; and
WHEREAS, recently approved administrative rules of the Department of
Land and Natural Resources may prohibit future fund raising activities at the site
and therefore deny the Big Island Fann Bureau access t~ the site.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HAWAII FARM
BUREAU FEDERATION, that it endorses the efforts of the Big Island Farm
Bureau to seek assurances for the Department of Land and Natural Resources that
the Old Kona Airport State Park will become the permanent site for the Big Island
Fann Fair; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation
coimnends the State Parks Division's administration acid staff for their past
contributions to tlris importa~it public purpose; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Fann Bureau Federation
transmit copies of this Resolution to Benjamin Cayetano, Governor of the State of
Hawaii; Michael Wilson, Chairman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources;
Senate President; Speaker of the House; Big Island State Senators and
Representatives; Stephen Yamashiro, Mayor of the County of Hawaii; Hawaii
Cotmty Council; and Ralston Nagata, State Parks Administrator.
