This bill is a small but important step in obtaining some changes in our building codes that will make building new homes more affordable. The onerous mainland building codes that went into effect a few years ago have added huge costs to new construction as well as making it almost impossible to build the types of Hawaiian-style homes that are beloved and practical here. I understand that Bill 124 could reduce building costs of a new home by approximately$10,000. So I applaud the County Council for this step in the right direction. I urge the Council to continue on this path and when there is a chance to reverse or amend the building codes in the future that you continue to make changes. I encourage any efforts to make building new homes more cost effective. Thank you to the Council for this positive bill.
