I have a pig fence surrounding the property yet my neighbor has allowed his dogs to jump the fence to mangle my chickens. Dogs do not EAT chickens they kill them for sport. I have since shot and killed one of his dogs and he now keeps them on his property. In total, I have shot and killed nine off leash dogs that were on my farm. No regrets at all,the owners know better. My farm neighbor cannot afford the approximate cost of$50,000-$100,000 for a tall enough pig fence to keep her neighbor's off leash dogs away. That neighbor lets his dogs out in the very early AM and his dogs have thus far ripped to shreds more than 50 of her hens. The dogs are on camera tearing apart a chicken coop and even coming all the way to her front door. Yet the police will do nothing about it unless they physically see the dogs attack on her property. Video is not enough for them to even investigate it. Not one visit to these neighbors to even ask them to keep their dogs on their own property. Animal control is no better. We have hired a hunter to kill the dogs. A different neighbor allowed his dog onto my friend's farm. We watched in horror as the dog snapped then neck of a hen less than 10 feet away from us. In the shouting that ensued the neighbor said "I have a gun and you are going to be sorry." Sounds like a threat to me. The police were called. The officer refused to go up their gravel driveway, not 4 wheel drive just gravel,as he did not want to get his shiny black Charger dusty. He filed a report that made no mention of the dead chicken or the gun threat. At that time we involved the new police chief who resolved this issue and ensured that the officer would not do that again. Why was that necessary? I believe that any off leash dog that is not on the owner's property should be caught, impounded and euthanized. There have been enough maulings and killings of humans that this issue is far beyond past due to be resolved. Any person who cares at all about their animals needs to be responsible for keeping those animals under physical control at all times.
