RE: Resolution 427 24-Support

We all know that Hawaii County has a severe housing crisis.The County Office of Housing has been
working diligently with developers to meet our affordable housing needs.The Kuakini Heights
Affordable Dwelling Development planned at (3)7-5-003:007 in Kona is one of those projects.They are
targeting households at or below 60%AMI and will have been approved to receive 20 Project Based
Vouchers when units are ready for occupancy. There will be 100 one,two, and three bedroom
affordable units.
This project is in the right place. It is in the urban core. It is close to public transportation. The
Kealakehe public schools are a short bus ride away. In addition,the developer is building affordable
housing units before they build the large lot single family homes. That is attractive because if the
developer wishes to build the single family market rate houses they must live up to their commitment
to build the affordable housing units first.
Now is the time to act to turn give our individuals and families the opportunity to find housing that
they can afford. At St. Michael's we have parishioners and community members who frequent our
food pantry and keiki backpack food distribution every week because they either must decide to
stretch their budget on rent and rely on food handouts, or they are living in their cars because they
cannot find affordable rent. These people deserve to raise their children in stable environments.
Please vote yes on Resolution 427.
