I was living in Kapoho during the Kilauea and lava flows. It was a stressful nightmare to know that we only had one way out of Puna after the lava covered Hwy 130.And that road was along the ocean and narrow with the lava also flowing in that direction. Try living with that stress for weeks!! We need alternate routes to safety for any natural disaster. Bill 131-24,allocating$2,000,000 for the Puna Alternate Routes Study. Spearheaded by the Department of Public Works, the study aims to identify alternate routes and elevate quality of life by: - Improving transportation efficiency, - Reducing traffic congestion, and - Enhancing evacuation capabilities during emergencies. The funding includes $1,000,000 from the Hawai'i State Legislature and an additional $1,000,000 from the County of Hawaii. The alternate route study aligns with Resolution 416-24,a policy directive adopted by the Hawai'i County Council on January 24, 2024.
