Dear hawaii county council,
Aloha and thank you for taking the time to read my testimony regarding Puna Roads this Feb 6th 2024.
My name is Jasmine Sara Steiner and ram 35 years old. I am a born and raised Puna girl, raised in leilani estates on Mohala street. I
love my home with every morsel in me,and it needs help.
I am here to speak about lower Puna and its needing roads due to immense threats we are under,if anything. Living in a community
constantly affected by volcanic eruptions, natural disasters,and geothermal H2S threats,and sick the ohanas that come from this
reality, is challenging.
Our people are sick, noone will acknowledge the real issues of Puna people,so without the proper roads,our lives are at risk in case
of emergencies,and you folks as our" public servants" know this.
The absence of escape routes leaves us vulnerable and helpless, its also lawsuits waiting to happen. Puna has needed roads for a
century,yet anytime we get close,the council throws it out. There is no excuse.Aloha aina,aina Aloha you.
It is crucial that our community urgently addresses this need for roads to ensure our safety and survival,after all,we are all sick
down here and currently held basically hostage in our homes down past pahoa due to puna geothermal venture,as you all know and
ignore.
The Puna people ARE rising,
And do I think,as a child of Puna,that it's best the ones working for them, listen for once .This is only the beginning of Puna
Rising. Younger generations are stepping up. I think it's best we work together for the actual good of the people, not the interests
of salaries and pockets.We need alternate roads.The amount of money I personally have spent just having to put 20$in my vehicle
every time I have to simply go up to pahoa.,since 2018,has added up and I can't even stay afloat.
Pre 2018 it took 7 minutes to get up to pahoa from my familys farm on pohoiki road,after the eruption it now takes 45 mins ONE
WAY.think about it.
My keiki is so sick most days,we have to drive up through geothermal gassings from the unmonitored amd acknowledged 24 active
kilauea pgv fissures in leilani spewing out cancer causing toxins 24/7,and it makes her extremely sick,and I will not stand for no
alternative roads,or even ONE SINGLE ROAD IN GENERAL.WE NEED YOU GUYS TO STOP GIVING PUNA THE CRAP END OF THE STICK
.Thank you folks for trying to allocate 2 million to alternative routes, as we all know there are many alternatives that don't include
dhhl lands,so to throw it out just because it MAY include them, is a excuse none of us in Puna will accept.
Please do your jobs now.You are on notice that the people of puna can't breathe, and can't escape if needed.The cards are in your
hands.
