Resolution No. 79
RESOLUTION APPROVING APPLICATION OF FIRST UNITED PROTESTANT
CHURCH OF HILO FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CEMETERY AT PONAHAWAI,
SOUTH HILO, HAWAII. •
WHEREAS, in accordance with the provisions of County of
Hawaii Ordinance No. 66, the First United Protestant Church of
Hilo has applied for. approval for the establishment of a
cemetery at Ponahawai, South Hilo, Hawaii; and
• WHEREAS, the applicant has complied with all the provisions
of said ordinance,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
in and for the County of Hawaii that it hereby approves the
application of the First' United Protestant Church of Hilo to
establish a cemetery at Ponahawai, South Hilo, County and State
of Hawaii; containing an area of 10. 799 acres, more or less, and
located on the south side of the proposed Ponahawai Street extension
approximately 500 feet southwest of the Kapiolani-Ponahawai Street
intersection, at Ponahawai, South Hilo, Hawaii, more particularly
described on the attached map, which is incorporated herein and
made a part of this resolution by reference. The approval is -
subject, however, to the following conditions :
1. That the said First United Protestant Church of Hilo
complies with all provisions of Ordinance No. 66, County of
Hawaii, and all rules, regulations or requirements of the Board
of Water Supply and the Department of Health.
2. That said church shall submit subdivision plans if it
desires to sell individual cemetery plots. The Planning Commission
shall stipulate conditions on approval for subdivision.

• 3. Setback. for the plots shall be as follows :
a. Adjacent to Alenaio Stream in conformance with
Department of Health regulations.

b. A 20-foot setback for landscaping and buffer
strip adjacent to Ponahawai Street and the
Kaumana side property line.
4. In accord with the General Plan, cemetery markers
shall be set flush with the ground and extensive landscaping
shall be employed to produce a park-like quality.
Unless the conditions are complied with within one year
from date of this approval, the approval shall become null
and void and the land shall revert to its use prior to the
granting of the approval.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Planning Commission
is hereby instructed to investigate and report to the Board of
Supervisors whether the conditions have been or are being fulfilled.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that County of Hawaii Resolution
No. 33 ( 1967) is hereby repealed.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that a copy each of this resolution
be transmitted to the First United Protestant Church of Hilo, ,
the County Planning Commission, Department of Public Works and
to the Board of Water Supply, County of Hawaii .
