RE: NAMING OF THE KONA GYM
Coming up is a resolution to name the Kona Gymnasium "Queen
Liliuokalani Gymnasium" .
Right behind that Resolution is one which I have put forward with
the name "Kekuaokalani" , which was given to me by the Hawaiian
Community in Kailua-Kona.
History is now, and always has been, only the story of the victors
in battles and wars .
Kekuaokalani fought to his death for what be believed in, his
tradition - the old ways of Hawaiians ! He lost.
So is it not now fitting to look back with respect on this ancient
and noble warrior who had. the courage to fight to the death for
what be believed. Must history always, only honor the victors?
The Hawaiian monarchy was also defeated. As we work to hold and
keep sacred the history, heritage and traditions of Hawaii; as the
Hawaiian people struggle to maintain their culture; is it not
fitting that this great warrior be remembered? Was his struggle
any different than what Queen Liliuokalani fought for or any
different than what Hawaiians fight for today?
On behalf of the Kailua-Kona Hawaiian Community I ask your
amendment of the naming of the Kona Gymnasium to "KEKUAOKALANI"
