Your Committee on Human Services and Public Works, to which was
referred Communication No. 529 and its attached Bill No. 124,
reports as follows :
Bill No. 124 seeks to name the new gym at Kailua-Kona "Liliuokalani
Gymnasium" .
Article 8, Section 15-68 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 requires
that the naming of all recreational facilities be done by ordinance
of the County Council . Section 15-67(a) (4) (B) (iv) further provides
that a structure may be named for a person alive or deceased who has
accomplished significant achievements in fields of endeavor which
have been of benefit to other persons .
Bill No. 124 , first heard at the August 11, 1993 County Council
meeting, was referred back to Committee for further consideration.
At the August 23 , 1993 Human Services and Public Works Committee
meeting, Bill No. 124, Draft 2, was circulated. Bill No. 124,
Draft 2, amends Bill No. 124 by naming the new Kona gym
"Kekuaokalani Gymnasium" . Your Committee was advised that
Kekuaokalani , nephew of King Kamehameha I, and entrusted as guardian
of the war god, Kukailimoku, was a leader in resisting the
abolishment of the ancient Hawaiian religious system. Kekuaokalani
courageously led and perished at the Battle of Kuamoo, in Keauhou,
Kona, fighting to uphold the ancient ways . He is remembered today
for his loyalty to traditional Hawaiian ways and for the love and
support given to him by the people of old Hawaii .
Your Committee was further advised that the name Kekuaokalani was
chosen by members of the Kona community who felt it was a suitable
and proper name for the facility.
Your Committee on Human Services and Public Works is in accord with
the purpose and intent of Bill No. 124 , Draft 2, and recommends its
passage at first reading by the County Council .
