Subject: Support: Bill 131-24 • Puna Alternate Routes
Aloha,
I have traveled in many countries and seen how protected bicycle paths and walkways bring visitors
while also allowing more ecofriendly commutes to reduce traffic.
As the Netherlands has shown, by creating protected cycle infrastructure so more people feel safe to use
an ebike or cycle, it reduces traffic which is actually better for those continuing to drive.
One feasible Puna to Hilo route is the old government highway and Railroad avenue.This could easily
and cheaply be converted to a dedicated cycle/pedestrian path that also allows ebikes.
It would bring ecofriendly transport options, provide a secondary evacuation route and support local
tourism in Puna at a very low cost.All that is needed is the political will to reopen this ancient route.
