In support of Resolution 436
I am the owner of Island Naturals Markets, a group of local retail grocery markets located in Hilo,
Pahoa, and Kailua-Kona. Kim Pierce and I have known each other for 15 years, becoming acquainted
during my time serving in the Hawaii State Senate and because she is an active member of the
community and the owner of a counseling center in our community.
In recent years, Kim and I have spoken about the increasing childcare needs. I have witnessed the
shortage of childcare firsthand from the employees in Island Naturals markets, many of which can
only accept part-time or must decline employment because child care is simply not available in the
Hilo area.
As a local business owner and former state senator, I am excited about the economic benefits that
increasing early childhood education capacities will bring to our community. I urge you to support the
community's urgent requests for the release of ARPA funds to set up new facilities. I understand that
the window for use of funds ends in 2024 and funds have been available for years. Any actions or
non action that would jeopardize use of those funds simply does not match with the Statewide
priorities that our leaders have communicated and families and ECE providers have been advocating
for.
