I write in Opposition to Res.443-24. w
I am a naturalist,and retired from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I am very familiar with natural histories and the geology of
Kilauea. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has been studying Kilauea for 100+years,and scientists still have many
questions about the"How"of eruptions.
Despite claims of"fracking"and how it caused the 2018 eruption,there is ABSOLUTELY NO BASIS for those claims. We do
understand that the subaerial(underground)geology of the East Rift is extremely complex because of numerous eruptions,
earthquakes,subsidence,etc. We don't have x-ray vision and cannot see into subterranean regions.
As far as I know,there are no potable water wells ma kai of the East Rift Zone of Kilauea. We know that the majority of Puna
ma kai relies on catchment.
I continually hope that non-sense will be ignored,and that political"Leaders"will educate themselves about general geology
so they have a sound basis for decisions. But time and again it has been proven that the loudest voices,no matter how
ignorant,win.
If you want to spend money on a study,please examine why politicians refuse to ban building ON or in close proximity to THE
RIFT ZONE. Keahialaka,the ahupua'a in which lies"Leilani Estates"sits astride,ON,the rift. Ke(the)ahi(fire)a(of)Laka(an
elemental force),referencing repeated eruptions there. Similarly, not a person has said that Kapoho must not be
rebuilt. Tidepools,coconut palms,turtles,cottages,all gone. The shore has been extended nearly a half mile ma kai,
elevation increased to+/-100 feet above sea level. It's all a sea of lava. Kapoho is gone and should never be rebuilt.
And rather than say"We need to restore Hwy137,between Kapoho and Pohoiki"for connectivity",why not a comprehensive
study of the region,eruptive histories,and why people stubbornly insist of building in Puna ma kai. Spending multi-millions of
dollars on a Highway over the virgin 2018 still-hot lava flow is not a prudent thing at best,and insane at worst. Since
politicians allow,and some residents insist on living on or ma kai of Lava Hazard Zone 1 or 2, spend that money on upgrading
roads in the region.
Yes, I know that some of these comments are"Off-topic",but an informed,wide perspective of the connectivity of issues is
extremely important. Ignoring that fact leads to decisions based on ignorance and very poor understandings of realities.
Again, I am OPPOSED TO RES.443-24.
