RE: SUPPORT Resolution 443-24
Aloha, Committee Chair and members,
I strongly urge your SUPPORT for resolution 443-24 introduced by Puna Councilmember Ashley
Kierkiewicz.Ten years ago, the community met with consultant Peter Adler to address the
health effects associated with the siting of an industrial geothermal facility in close proximity to
the community. The Adler report outlined the concerns over air quality, pollution, and
groundwater contamination as issue of concern. Community members and I have been
concerned for many years that the caustic soda introduced into the geothermal brine along with
other agents could be impacting groundwater and coastal ecosystems.
I also hope that we will have an opportunity to improve the currently deficient to non-existent
air quality monitoring in communities that have been affected by hydrogen sulfide (H2S)
releases, as these community members, including the elderly, children and the differently abled
populations, have been adversely affected by accidently releases with no prior warning and no
viable escape routes.
Thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony.
Deborah Ward
