Kohala Mountain Road and the last stretches of Akoni Pule Highway towards Pololu are by nature SLOWer roads. Folks surprised by slower vehicles including bikes on the road when they take a blind curves are generally NOT driving at the posted 25-35 mph speed limit despite their protestations. More advance warning signs, slower speed limits, advisements of next turnout area &other traffic aids in the problem areas should be implemented. Not just outright barring one group of users, commercial or not. And not by elevating the demands of one class of users (motor vehicles) over others. Otherwise the proponents of Bill 125 should also want to ban slow-moving trucks pulling big loads which also inconveniences them. Unfortunately, sharing the road means being patient until there is a turnout behind slow-moving delivery trucks, horseback riders, farm machinery equipments. But we don't ban such road users outright. We shouldn't ban commercial bike groups just because they are the new kids on the block&are new to our (dis)comfort zone. If anything, we shd be encouraging such lighter impact uses of the roads(i.e. bicycles, pedestrians etc.) to enjoy our Kohala scenic treasures. They leave a lighter footprint on our infrastructure as compared to motorized vehicles' immense wear&tear on our roadways. We should be encouraging bicycle use, NOT banning them. We can all use the road safely if we followed the posted speed limits. No need to speed & cause a traffic accident. Thanks for listening to another viewpoint.
