Dear Honorable Members of the Hawaii County Council,
I'm writing today with concerns about Bill 143, specifically its proposal to extend council
terms and modify term limits.At a time when our island faces pressing challenges—like
infrastructure needs and housing affordability—this bill seems to divert attention from
where it's urgently needed.
Public service should be about contributing to our community's well-being, not securing
long-term political positions and making careers out of it. Extending terms could limit fresh
perspectives and ideas, which are crucial for addressing our island's complex issues.
Furthermore, the recent election cycle showed limited voter engagement in the election
process, suggesting a need for more inclusivity in our democracy, not less.
Drawing parallels to political strategies seen elsewhere, aimed at consolidating power, is
concerning. Our democratic values cherish regular renewal of leadership to guard against
the concentration of power and ensure governance remains closely aligned with the
community's needs.
Introducing such significant changes to our electoral system without ample public
discussion or notice seems out of step with the principles of transparency and democracy.
I urge the Council to reconsider and oppose Bill 143. Let's refocus our collective efforts on
addressing the immediate and tangible needs of our community, ensuring our governance
remains dynamic, inclusive, and responsive.
