My name is Zahz Manawapou HewLen I am a candidate for Hawaii County Council District 7 and I testify in strong opposition to proposed bill 143. I believe this bill poses a great disservice to constituents by decreasing the frequency of public intervention in the event an elected council member is not serving their district in a way that is satisfactory to voters. I also think this bill will increase complacency and mediocrity in sitting councilmembers leading to a decrease in productivity. Our people deserve competent leadership and the current 2 year term ensures that our people have consistent options if they want a change. For incumbent candidates, it doesn't serve the public to try to secure your positions for possibly 12 more years beyond what you've already served. For some in your 3rd or 4th term, that would be potentially provide the opportunity for almost 20 years in the same public office and I don't care who you are, that is too long for anyone in the same position of leadership within a democracy. It is not about the quantity of years you serve, it's about the quality of those years. Please vote A'OLE to this bill to maintain public trust in the County legislative process and their local representatives. Mahalo!
