Subject: Support for Bill 144-24
Dear Chair and Committee members:
I am writing this testimony in SUPPORT of Bill-144-24. I have been backyard beekeeping on and off for the past 40 years
in Hilo and Puna and am a member of the Big Island Beekeepers Association. I typically have from one to 5 hives. I raise
bees for their honey, wax, and pollination. It is also a very relaxing hobby.
To make a long story short, I had to relocate my bees because one neighbor, who lived a couple of houses up the street,
said it was illegal to keep bees in a residential neighborhood. I relocated them, but it was not the same as having them in
the backyard. I could not check and care for them as often as when they were 50 feet from my back door. Bees not only
benefit the beekeeper but these wonderful girls pollinate plants all around the beekeepers neighborhood and beyond.
Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to testify in support of Bill 144-24.
Respectfully submitted,
