Hello,
I'm submitting testimony in support of this bill, which updates outdated, restrictive, and potentially
harmful laws concerning apiaries and beekeeping in Hawai'i.
Bees are one of the most important members of our global ecosystem to humans. They pollinate 75
percent of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the United States and are responsible for one out
of every four bites of food people take.
But they're being killed off at an alarming rate, with potentially devastating consequences for
biodiversity and human health. And what scientists now call "colony collapse disorder" threatens
family farms and small businesses all over the country.
Hawai'i beekeepers help to maintain bee populations across the continental United States. Making
beekeeping accessible, even to small businesses and properties can help to alleviate some of this
burden and shortage.
